Grass Roots Patriotism

There has been a nice Constitution display at our Visitors’ Center in town all week. Color Guard, Prayers, Keynote Address, and entertainment was held in our 1767 Courthouse. In addition to the 51 women, Edenton has other ties to the Constitution history. Founding Father James Wilson died in Edenton in 1798 of malaria. He was buried here, but later President Theodore Roosevelt had Wilson’s body transferred to Philadelphia. There is a large monument in Edenton to Hugh Williamson, a signer of the Constitution. A wreath is laid at the monument during Constitution Week.
I wrote a blog earlier this month about visiting Constitution Hall in Philadelphia. Attending these kinds of observations, visiting displays and touring National Historical Sites are the best ways I know of to plant seeds of patriotism in young people.
