Loo'-duh- wee'-see. "But," she said, ""my dad's lived there all his life and calls it Loseyourbritches, Georgia. You know what we're famous for, right? Speed traps. We're famous for speed traps. You can lose your britches in Ludowici, Georgia!"
" So noted," I said.We had a good time with that.
We walked along the sidewalks in Columbus gawking at the architecture and snapping pictures. I pointed out the daisy motif on the buildings and wondered what it was called and from what era.
"I think I've seen those before," Miriam said thoughtfully. "Now I remember! In Charleston they have these as me things. They run a rod through the building to stabilize it for hurricanes."
I stared at her? "Hurricanes? How do you happen to know that?
" I took a tour in Charleston and they told us. The people didn't like the big bolts sticking out of their buildings so they put these things on to cover them?"
"These are bolt covers? Hurricanes?" Back at the hotel we googled it and learned even more.
The second day of the conference we arrived at the Trade Center early enough to have time to visit the museum upstairs to see the machinery parts and some of the iron products this foundry produced. There in the display was a pile of daisy bolt covers, made right here at Columbus Iron Works.
Isn't it amazing how much unnecessary information one can glean at a conference? Information to be forgotten or recalled randomly. I might not remember how to say Ludowici but I will always remember to slow down in Loseyourbritches.
