BELONGING
This was a Catholic celebration, to be sure. Catholicism is ethnic: Polish, Italian, Irish, others and they all celebrate, even while embracing America. It’s good to remember the roots. The Lithuanians have a strong heritage they protect in their families. It was evident this weekend. Young people spoke their language fluently with their grandparents; cousins had fun joking and dancing. Special food, unique costumes and music. Uncles taught nieces and nephews the dances. Many people bought my book to give for a Mothers’ Day gift. “Momma” or “Grandmommy” will love this!” They celebrate their heritage. They opened the occasion with the presentation of the colors and both National Anthems. Both flags adorned the Armory. They are Lithuanian-Catholic-American. The welcome in the brochure ends with : “Whether you were born in Lithuania, your parents were born there, your grandparents or great grandparents, for this festival we are all Lithuanians And if you married a Lithuanian, or are friends with Lithuanians, hey, welcome to the family!”
