Workers are often on my mind, believing in them as I do, as being the backbone of our country. I realized this week that much of what I write reflects that belief. In a yet unpublished story, Waiting With Elmer, Willy learns about Labor Day. In the book releasing March 8, Rock and a Hard Place, A Lithuanian Love Story, Vytas, the newly arrived immigrant from Lithuania explains to his American peers why he won't take unemployment checks from the government when his plant is on strike. When I was interviewing Vytas and he told me about this conversation, ....
I know what goes around comes around. I hope this work ethic does. It's time Americans return to having pride in their work, pride in providing for themselves; pride in being able to share their resources to aid others when they need help. Americans have always been generous in helping others in need and in crisis. We can do this for ourselves.
Aiken is thanking God for the kindness of all these truck drivers and chippers and tree service people who are away from their homes here on the job. Several are here in my hotel. And God Bless America.
