Newnan, Georgia
I’m here with my books as a guest of Ellis Arnall Middle School. The school was named for Ellis Arnall, Governor of Georgia 1943-1947.
Newnan, Georgia This week I’m visiting Newnan, Georgia, the county seat of Coweta County. You might have heard of Coweta County, since several movie and TV shows have been filmed there, including the classic Murder in Coweta County, and several episodes of The Walking Dead. Named for General Daniel Newnan in 1828, Newnan is southwest of Atlanta. It was always a prosperous city drawing lawyers, doctors and other professionals. Its prosperity was a result of a thriving cotton industry. Due to its placement as a hospital city (confederate) it was mostly untouched during the Civil War, and today retains much of its antebellum architecture and homes. During the Atlanta Campaign, the Union was defeated by the confederate cavalry at the Battle of Brown’s Mill. An active Historical Society and continued civic pride and interest in history means several museum sites can be found in Newnan. Newnan is one of the few Georgia counties with a museum that focuses mainly on African American history. The first black library was built in Newnan in the 1950s and has been converted to Community Action for Improvement Center. The largest slave cemetery in the South located here, is also the largest undisturbed one in the nation.
