“The people and the subplots make the story move quickly and are educational at the same time. The educational aspect is slipped in among the story so the reader will learn and not even realize it is like a textbook. So many people don’t have fond memories of school and history so they don’t think they like history. Enjoyable books like Avery’s Battlefield help make history interesting and even exciting.”—Jan Parys, Writer and Reviewer
“I just finished Avery’s Battlefield-loved it! I want a dog like Gunner! I hope you are working on book two right now, because I want to see how Claire/Avery turn out! Historical fiction, my favorite books to read. My daughter will read it next. She reads a book a day and I can’t get books fast enough for her.”—Britta Ryan Choberka, Reader and Mom
“I bought the book on Saturday and finished on Sunday. It was MARVELOUS! I especially loved the taters and Avery’s special care of Mrs. Somebody. I cannot wait until the second comes out.”—Ann McWhirt, Historian, Prince William County, VA
“I continue to recommend your books to my customers.”—Thom Barritt, Barritt Books Virginia Beach, VA
“Thoroughly enjoyable. A great example of historical fiction. Good reading for young adults and old adults alike. Can’t wait for the next installment!”—Lori Anne, Reviewer
“Great read for interested adults as well as teens. If you care about history and the lack thereof in in schools give this book to your children and grandchildren. Without knowledge of history we are committed to make some of the same mistakes in the future. Very appealing story about the Civil War. Can’t wait for her next one!”—Sal22, Reviewer, Amazon
“This is a book for young and old alike. I am a 70 year-old grandmother of 14, who just happened to be born in WV, so all of Avery’s geography was familiar to me. My grandfather was a farmer and the story was very true to his way of life and his moral values. This book is very well written and I plan to give it and the author’s next book, Avery’s Crossroad, to all of my teen grandchildren for Christmas.”—Grammy Pammy, Reviewer, North Carolina
“…This book is an enjoyable read for young and old. I can’t wait for the next one.”—RMB, Reviewer
“This is the kind of book I would have devoured as a young kid (tween and teen years.)…The characters are likeable…they exhibit human emotions…I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the Civil War period and adventure stories with young teens. A great book.—T. Tureson, Chicago, IL, reviewer via Amazon
“My son Morgan had read every word of Avery’s Battlefield since he bought it on Saturday at the Civil War Show. One of only a few books he has WANTED to read. I had to make him turn his light off and go to bed a couple of nights. You have turned him on to reading. I have always fought with him to get him to read. He asked me to buy him another book he could read while he waited for book two. Hope it comes out soon. Thanks again.”—Christy Jackson, Wrightsville, GA
“…fast-paced, intense and honest, a gentle read in spite of the grim subject matter. Not overly long, a moderately easy read for a middle schooler.”—Youth Services Librarian, NetGalley
“Just finished the first Avery novel and loved it. So-o-o beautifully written. Can’t wait to share it with my niece and nephew.” Mary Bean, Highlands, NC
“I loved the Avery book. It really makes me appreciate all that I have today. You did a great job describing the era…can’t wait to read the next one.” Dawn Sweet Boughton, MI, reader
“I presented Avery’s Crossroad at a presentation of Kentucky Council for the Social Studies this week.” Dr. Judy Pierce, Western Kentucky University
“I just finished book II and had to write to thank you for the joy, laughter and tears of these two books. They are wonderful.” Amy Blumenthal, WV
“Avery’s Battlefield, book one, is a well-written story about a 14 year-old Quaker boy’s various adventures in 1861-1862. Avery and his dog have a series of adventures in what would become the state of West Virginia. Deanna Klingel’s narrative is fast-paced and riveting. The main characters are believable and the story line is told in an entertaining style. The book has Christian overtones that are not overpowering and are successfully woven into the narrative.”—Michael Russert, North Shore Round Table of Long Island and the Company of Military Historians Coordinator of The New York State Veteran Oral History Program. His review appeared in Civil War News.
“Another enjoyable novel is Avery’s Crossroad, book two, by Deanna K. Klingel. Book one received a positive review in the Nov 2011 issue of CWN. This sequel is excellent as well. It covers the war years 1863-65. The book is considered Christian historical fiction and is a great choice for adolescents. It provides a wholesome message for young readers while they learn Civil War history.”—Dr. David A. Galli, St. Louis, MO, Civil War News
“I purchased both books at the bookfair in Kernersville, NC, for my grandchildren. I have read both books myself. I absolutely loved both books and can’t wait to share in the adventure with the children. Thanks for such a historically accurate and compelling adventure.”—Julie Yates, Roanoke, VA
“…the museum continues to promote your book by showing the book trailer and providing a brief overview of the book while discussing the medical tools on exhibit. The students are amazed and very quiet while watching the trailer. I personally have read both books and enjoyed each one. I wish I had an opportunity to read a book like those to spark my interest when I was in the 5th or 6th grade. I would have enjoyed studying the Civil War a little more.”—Lori Meads, Educator, Museum of the Albemarle, Elizabeth City, NC
“…Bought both of your books and started reading the first one that afternoon. Could hardly put it down. My husband and I drove through Pipestem on Mon. Even though we weren’t as far north as Avery was traveling, we could visualize the adventures and difficulties of travel as Avery, Fan, and Gunner made their way. I read excerpts from the book to my husband as we drove through the mountains. And thought often of Avery and still am, while doing other things. That must be the mark that a god writer would like to leave! And now I’m enjoying the 2nd book.”—Connie Christison, Perryville, KY
“The story is great-u-wont be able to put the book down! U will see the civil war through a whole new set of eyes! Great gift for any young adult reader!”—Debbie (Amazon)
“This was a wonderful book concerning the era of the Civil War. Well written and giving insight to the times to students of the junior high age grop with appropriate subject matter and language. Nevertheless it is nice reading even for adults. It would be excellent additional reading for students while studying that period of our history.”—Susan , Germantown, TN, via Amazon
“ It’s a good read. I liked the history. The dog could be more realistic, but overall, it is a good story. I will order book #2.” Skip Clark,
A student review: “Avery’s Battlefield is a good fictional book to read…This is a good book for middle schoolers who like to read and who don’t like to read. It is a book not only for boys but for girls because in the backdrop is the Civil War so this book has a lot of history and is the kind of adventure that is just right for girls and boys. I like this book because it was exciting. Another reason that I liked this book would be that the main character is a Christian and shows it in his character. ..I really liked this book and can’t wait to read book number two, Avery’s Crossroads.”—Kid Reviewer, Amazon
“Wonderful! This is a great book, combining an entertaining story with well-researched historial fact. I highly recommend it to young and old alike!”—Christine J. Pierson, Sapphire, NC, Amazon reader
